Non-formal Training on Tolerance with 8th “V” Grade at St. Knyaz Boris I Secondary School
A team from Youth Center – Asenovgrad visited the 8th “V” grade at St. Knyaz Boris I Secondary School and facilitated a non-formal learning session dedicated to tolerance. The visit was part of the center’s ongoing efforts to engage young people in meaningful conversations about respect, inclusion, and responsible behaviour – both at school and beyond.
Through interactive exercises, role play, and small group work, students explored what it really means to be tolerant towards someone who is different, new in the class, or simply has other opinions, interests, style, or cultural background. Together, we discussed stereotypes and prejudice, the impact of hate speech, and how words said “as a joke” can still hurt.
During the workshop, the young people shared personal examples from school and from the online space, reflected on situations of exclusion and bullying, and looked for more fair and human-centred solutions. A strong emphasis was placed on empathy, active listening, and the ability to “step into someone else’s shoes”, as well as on how each student can be a positive role model in their class.
The team from Youth Center – Asenovgrad also briefly presented what youth work is and what opportunities the center offers – initiatives, volunteering, trainings and campaigns related to human rights, participation, and civic engagement.
We would like to thank the school management, the class teacher, and, most of all, the students of 8th “V” grade for their active participation, open dialogue, and willingness to make their school environment more tolerant, inclusive, and supportive. Such visits are an important part of our mission to be close to young people and to work with them where they are – in school, in their neighbourhoods, and in the community.
