Youth Center – Asenovgrad at “St. Knyaz Boris I” Secondary School: Non-formal Financial Literacy Training with 12th Grade
The team of Youth Center – Asenovgrad visited “St. Knyaz Boris I” Secondary School in Asenovgrad and entered the 12th grade to deliver a non-formal training on Financial literacy. The visit began with a brief introduction in which the team presented the Youth Center, its mission, and the opportunities it offers to young people—participation in initiatives, trainings, and events that support personal and civic development.
The session continued with a brainstorming activity: the word “money” was written on the board, and students contributed associations and examples that highlight the presence of money in everyday life—from planning small expenses to making larger decisions. Together, we outlined the topics that matter most to graduating students.
Next, the module focused on helping participants understand their financial goals through short personal reflections on aspirations, priorities, and expectations after graduation. These included budgeting for the first months of independent living, saving for education, making mindful purchases, and exploring first investment ideas. This exchange showed how the core principles of financial literacy apply to individual situations.
To conclude, students were divided into teams for a role-play exercise that placed them in a realistic life scenario. Each team received a scenario with specific income, expenses, and unexpected events; their task was to build a workable plan—prioritizing, balancing the budget, and making choices under constraints. Teams presented their solutions with clear reasoning, demonstrating responsibility, teamwork, and practical thinking. Everyone performed very well, showing understanding of the key principles of sound financial behavior.
The non-formal format—combining discussion, practical logic, and scenario-based teamwork—encouraged active participation and turned the training into a meaningful experience with takeaways students can apply immediately. Youth Center – Asenovgrad thanks the leadership and staff of “St. Knyaz Boris I” Secondary School for their support, as well as all 12th graders for their engagement and commitment to the topic.
